As a young boy growing up in Eastern Oregon, Fee Stubblefield's best friend was his grandmother, Lillian Stubblefield. Such was their closeness that when Lillian began to decline in old age she made it known to Fee that she - like most seniors - didn't want to be sent off to "an old folks' home." Despite health issues and the challenges of maintaining her own house and well-manicured yard, Lillian remained fiercely independent, and insisted on being able to stay in her own home.
Fee took it upon himself to ensure that his grandmother's wishes were honored. But as Lillian's health continued to decline, and after exploring the local living options for Lillian and coming away dissatisfied, he decided to create an entirely new community. His goal was for Lillian and others like her to live comfortably and feel right at home, participate in activities, receive assisted living care when needed, and most importantly, to keep enjoying an active life. Pursuit of that goal resulted in The Springs Living communities, and their newest major remodel, The Springs at Carman Oaks.
Nestled at the base of Lake Oswego's desirable Mountain Park area, The Springs at Carman Oaks has recently undergone significant renovations, making it an even more attractive option to those looking to turn senior living into a life-fulfilling experience.
"This is not the Carman Oaks of the past," said Stubblefield, president and founder of The Springs Living, the McMinnville based company that now operates 12 retirement communities in Oregon and Montana. "This is the next generation's retirement community."
The $7.5 million renovation that began last year included a complete remodel. In addition to independent and assisted living apartments, memory care apartments were added during the renovations. Other upgrades include the addition of a swimming pool and spa for residents who wish to remain active and fit, a covered veranda for peaceful year-round outdoor enjoyment, and a wellness center offering a variety of exercise classes and certified personal training guidance. The community's main restaurant was also upgraded, to now provide sumptuous restaurant-style dining, all day long. The new Fancho's Pub serving casual fare can be found on site, as well as a movie theater.
The renovations create an environment with enhanced leisure and recreation in mind. "The renovations were intended to make The Springs at Carman Oaks like a land-based cruise ship," said Stubblefield.
Residents find it the perfect setting for relaxing and having fun. Daily activities include a variety of classes, social activities, gardening, group outings and more. Housekeeping, linen service and meal preparation are all handled by the caring staff, allowing residents to enjoy life and the important things like their friends and family.
Three living options are available for residents. Spacious, well-appointed independent living apartments are available in studio, one- and two-bedroom floor plans, each including a full kitchen. Also included are all maintenance and most utilities, weekly housekeeping and linen services, a 24-hour emergency response system and transportation services for medical appointments, shopping and entertainment.
Assisted living apartments include the same amenities but with kitchenettes and the addition of a registered nurse and trained care personnel. They are available in studio and one-bedroom floor plans.
The new memory care apartments are designed for those with memory impairment or dementia, who need extra assistance with everyday activities and full-time access to nursing care.
The Springs Living philosophy of honoring seniors, while providing opportunities to get the most out of the best years of their lives, is evident throughout the entire property. It's a philosophy that would make the founder's grandmother, Lillian, proud.
